One thing that absolutely failed to impress us was the search functionality in Shopify. People have minimal attention spans and do not intend to browse for the desired product by going through your entire library. This is why it is imperative for you to implement the search functionality that makes the job easier for your customers.

However, the Site Search in Shopify is a bit of a letdown. Without the Fuzzy Search, it tends to make things a lot more frustrating for the customers. Fuzzy Search is the ability to return relevant results even if the search argument does not match any products. Without the functionality, the users that make typing errors might not get the desired search results. Eventually, your products are not visible to them and you end up losing potential customers.

This is especially concerning for businesses that sell a wide range of products on their store. The users might not take out time to browse their entire range and end up abandoning the process.

‘Unique’ Customization Setup

We mentioned earlier in the pros that the customization options are one of the biggest reasons to choose Shopify. However, it all changes if you happen to be the kinds who like to tweak everything. What we are trying to say is it can be incredibly annoying for someone who needs to personalize it too much.

This is because Shopify uses a unique setup for its customizations. On the other hand something like WordPress customizations are built using PHP. People wanting to make small changes without doing a full-on customization find it hard to use. Since PHP is a common language, there are tons of online forums and support channels that can guide you. On the other hand, the Shopify setup is a bit more foreign for some.

The Shopify customizations are still easy to learn and come backed by a prompt support team. However, many first timers might need to hire professional help to make changes for their online store. Meanwhile, a WordPress website will need minimal changes in its PHP code that can be done by people on their own.

Content Marketing

Another con of using Shopify is content marketing. While the available features might be enough for beginners, the pros might not be completely satisfied with Shopify’s feature list. We say that because Shopify has focused on getting the basics right rather than offering the most extensive set of tools.

For all the cons listed here, this isn’t the one that particularly applies to Shopify. In fact, it is a major factor that keeps people from using any e-commerce platform. Lock-in essentially means that if you ever plan to move from the platform to something else, you could essentially lose all your data.

The only thing that you might be able to retrieve is the product information in a CSV export file. There is not much you can get except for that. The procedure is similar for all hosted ecommerce platforms including BigCommerce, Volusion and the others.

What that essentially means is that you will have to plan for the future. You cannot make decisions on the basis of what is in front of you today. There might be budget constraints that might be influencing you to go ahead with Shopify. Alternatively, it can also be the convenience that it brings along. However, you cannot decide to leave the platform once it is up and running.

You have to analyze how your business might grow/change in the future and what features that you believe are necessary to implement those changes.

For the $9 plan, Shopify only offers a Buy Now button that. There is only a small percentage of businesses that would go for this functionality. The most basic set of features come in the $29 plan.

Then there is the credit card fee. It is not significantly different from other hosted ecommerce platforms. A standard percentage of fees are levied on the amount of transactions. Shopify also has its own POS and processing network. This eliminates the need of a third party processor like PayPal or However, there are some lock-in issues with their POS network and we strongly recommend you explore all your choices.

Eventually, Shopify ends up being a little more expensive than Volusion and a tad bit inexpensive than BigCommerce. All the competitors have their pricings neck to neck which means you need to weigh in the pros and cons to make your final decision. Come up with the strategy and the tools you will need to implement it. Then search for those tools in the feature list of all the hosted ecommerce platforms.

Is Shopify Worth It?

Additionally, you can avail professional reports with this plan and also offer gift cards for your customers.

The $299 Advanced Plan has 15 staff accounts and comes packed with all the goodies you get in the $79 plan. In addition to that, with the Advanced Report Builder, you can use Shopify’s data to build relevant reports from them. This plan can also calculate the third party shipping charges from services like FedEx, UPS and more.
